Sign language is becoming an increasingly popular way to communicate with babies.
As a father-to-be, I find it terrifying to think that for the first years of my baby's life, I will not know what is bothering her when she is crying. Is she in pain? Is she hungry? Through sign language, though, you can begin communicating with your child before she's able to vocalize her thoughts.
Not only will you know what's going on in your baby's head, but there are studies showing long-term favorable consequences of sign language. They include:
- Babies who can sign are less frustrated because they can communicate with adults. This leads to fewer tantrums.
- People who learned sign language as babies tend to have higher IQs when tested later in life.
- Children who signed as infants have been shown to have more advanced language skills later in life.
- These children tend to have more self-esteem.
- Signing in the classroom has led to improved math scores among students.

I'll keep you all posted on how this goes. Good luck to all of you!!!
Please post any baby sign language stories you have.
